About Us

Formed by Sheryl Robinson in 2000 Hagley Dance Company is a fulltime dance programme attached to Hagley College, one of the most dynamic and vibrant campuses in Christchurch. Widely known for offering students a large range of subject choices and flexible timetable the College has earned a reputation for excellence in the Performing Arts. In 2009 Hagley Dance Company celebrated 10 years of operation and over 100 students have graduated in that time with many moving on to professional study and industry careers.

Bordering Hagley Park the College is easily accessible by public transport and close to the central city. As well as being members of Hagley Dance Company all of our students are also part of the wider College which allows access to a number of facilities including our own cafe, computer suite and onsite theatre. The College also offer free services to students ranging from a resident nurse to career guidance and counselling. Students of Hagley Dance Company are also able to take full advantage of various cultural and sporting opportunities such as ski trips, sports teams and music groups.

The course of study has been designed for those looking at a career in the performing arts and suits students who are considering professional study with providers such as UNITEC and New Zealand School of Dance. We view the programme as a 'stepping stone' to further study and an introduction to the physical and emotional pressures of studying Dance fulltime.

Most classes are held onsite in our own studios located on the Hagley College campus. As the course is practically based all students perform early in their training with performance spaces ranging from The Open Stage (Hagley Theatre Company) to the Southern Ballet Theatre and James Hay Theatre. Other opportunities (such as school appearances, film work and touring) may be available during the study year.

Classes are timetabled from 8:40am - 4:30pm (weekdays) and while we run to the standard Ministry of Education calendar there is a requirement for rehearsal and performance during holiday periods.

Those students who complete the course are issued with a Hagley College Certificate in Dance, indicating the National Certificate Unit Standards attained.
